Abstract

Secularization is derived from the word "secular," which refers to worldly matters, being non-religious and unrelated to religion, as defined by the Dewan Bahasa Dictionary (Fourth Edition). Secularization, which is synonymous with the term "secularizing," refers to the process of transforming religious values into worldly values. Thus, the purpose of this study is to explain French colonial secularization, referring to the process of reducing religious influence within society across various aspects, including politics, social life, and the economy. This secularization continued even after Tunisia gained independence. The methodology of this study applies the documentation method in collecting qualitative data, utilizing comparative, deductive, and inductive approaches. The findings of the study reveal that the secularization implemented by the French colonial administration transformed the religious landscape in Tunisia, altering the identity and culture of Tunisian society that persisted even after French decolonization.
