Abstract

The Kadazandusun Muslim community, like other adherents of Islam, is obligated to perform prayers (ṣalāh) in a proper manner. However, the differences in the phonetic systems between their mother tongue and the Arabic language pose significant challenges in articulating the recitations performed during prayers. Therefore, this study aims to explore the implications of such language interference by describing the changes in pronunciation and meaning caused by the influence of Kadazandusun phonological features on the recitation of rukun qawliyy (verbal pillars) during prayer. Three key research questions guide this study (1) What are the implications of Kadazandusun phonological interference on the pronunciation of Arabic letters?, (2) How does Kadazandusun phonological interference affect the meaning of the recitation in rukun qawliyy during prayer?, and (3) What are the implications of Kadazandusun phonological interference on the validity of rukun qawliyy in prayer? This qualitative study employs a library research methodology as the primary means of data collection. The findings of the study indicate that native speakers of the Kadazandusun language (BKD) are at risk of committing various pronunciation errors that could lead to changes in sound and meaning, particularly in the recitations required during prayer, specifically the qawliyy components. These errors evidently compromise the perfection of the qawliyy elements. It is hoped that this study will not only contribute to the improvement of Arabic language education but also help ensure the validity of worship practices among the Kadazandusun community in Sabah, particularly through the development of an Arabic learning module tailored for worship purposes within the framework of Fiqh Sabahi.
