In recent years, Indonesia has been actively implementing the Merdeka Belajar agenda, a form of independent learning applied comprehensively from lower levels to higher education. This concept, typically associated with modern educational theories rooted in Western philosophical thought, also has roots in the Islamic scientific tradition, particularly through the hadis of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. This article aims to review the concept of independent learning within the framework of philosophy and hadis as a dynamic contribution to the renewal of national education in Indonesia. This study employs a qualitative approach through literature analysis, with the data analyzed thematically. The results of the study show that the principles of independent learning have long existed in the Islamic tradition. The selected hadiss show the five main principles of independent learning: (1) freedom to seek knowledge, (2) freedom to choose the field of knowledge, (3) freedom to choose sources and teachers, (4) the obligation to disseminate knowledge and provide benefits to society, and (5) the principle of lifelong learning. This discovery provides critical epistemological principles to support the foundations of current education and offers an alternative paradigm that emphasizes prophetic values in addressing contemporary educational challenges.
